If MCL is not ported to Intel (my first choice), I'd like to see
Digitool market just an IDE which could be used by all the open source
Lisps. They could start with OpenMCL, but make it flexible enough to
support the other compilers. It would be a Cocoa version of the current
MCL IDE, based on Fred. This would be a fantastic contribution to the
Lisp community, and I think, a viable commercial product. I would
gladly pay $1000 or more just for a powerful IDE.
Slime has already shown that a general purpose IDE is feasible. Closure
has a Cocoa Bridge and, according to Andrew Shalit's recent post, is
developing a set of wrapper classes which replicate MCL's view system.
Most of the heavy lifting has already been done.
The genius of MCL lies in a tightly integrated set of simple, but
powerful tools. Nobody does this better than Digitool. Sell us your
tools! Good compilers are free these days.
MCL is not dead. There's a dance or two left in the old girl yet! In
fact this strategy would isolate MCL from future Cupertino
capriciousness --> digital immortality.
