  So far, Darwin's the only platform that uses signed chars.
  (For a good laugh, note that the PPC has an unsigned "load byte"
  instruction, but it takes two instructions to treat char as 
  signed.  This is, of course, much less significant than all of
  the other things that are wrong about Darwin ...)
