This seems to work for me, thanks. In fact I'm doing a combination of
this and what Ron suggested, which seems to be enough (my init file,
so far, only sets some printer control variables, but I've certainly
known other systems to be fragile against this (for instance things
that create symbols using (intern (with-output-to-string ...))).

Mine claims to be (a later version than it originally was of) 1.3.
Given the cost of disk space and how long it takes to do a cold build,
I probably will try keeping a trunk version as well in due course.
